The featured pic is from the "Bands for Barry 2" benefit concert. This concert was held to raise funds for my good friend Barry Meitjes' hospital expenses. At that stage he was not doing too well.
Barry was a local legend where I grew up in Pietermaritzburg. He was the godfather of the local music scene, having been involved in it since a young age. He ran the local studio in town and was a great mentor to many a musician passing through, including myself.
During my later years, I worked with Barry at our local music store, where he was my boss. I learned quite a lot from him in this time, and was always amazed at his great intellect, and thirst for knowledge. He was the real embodiment of a life-long learner.
Bass was his instrument, and he would always try teach us musos that it's not about the notes that you play, but about the spaces you leave between the notes. That's where the magic lies, in the feel.
Till we meet again, Pablo, at the great gig in the sky...
